THE HISTORY OF OUR MX5 mk2

New for the 2016 Scottish Lowland Speed Championship, Jim will drive this car in the A9 Class, (Scottish MX5 register).  The car is a Mazda MX5 mk2 1.8ltr (10th Anniversary Edition, chassis No 6695/7500), reg T329 CSS, European Market spec.  The car was first registered in the UK in 1999.

Late June 2015, Danny and I drive to Blackburn, Midlothian, to view the car which will become our 2016 project.  The car had previously been raced in the Lowland (see picture of previous owner left). Warned by a friend to pay particular attention to stereotypical mk2 defects we closely inspect the underside for rust and test the full range of gears (including reverse).  Happy with the condition and price, the deal is done.  Danny drives back to Callander in the car and appears to be in his element.  However, when we get back home he can't reverse up the driveway.  The selector for 5th and reverse gears is broken, and we have our first major repair to execute.

The Gearbox Saga

I went onto eBay to try to source a new box.  I couldn't believe my luck when I found one in Essex which had (allegedly) only done 32K, had it shipped to Dreadnought Garage where Paul Luti did the swap.  Unfortunately, after fitting the replacement, on testing, it only got half a mile and it totally packed up, luckily the vendor agreeed to take it back and gave us a full refund.  Now our only option was to rebuild the original box at great expense.  The work was carried out at ASK Transmissions, Falkirk, and fitted into the car at Dreadnought.

Our next task was to fit the safety systems to the car.  Roll cage, four-point harness, FIA approved bucket seat, snap-off steering boss and 330mm suede trimmed steering wheel completed the interior.

Safety systems upgraded
New suspension

The car handled reasonably well but we decided to upgrade to a fully adjustable coilover suspension system, choosing Meister R's.  Again we have Paul Luti to thank for fitting the new dampers and the painstaking work to corner weight balance the car and the geometry set-up.  It meant me sitting in the car for a long time on the ramps to get the balance perfect, but it was worth it.

Then we were down to minor improvements under the hood.  This comprised of new iridium spark plugs and a new HKS induction system, full upgrade of coolant system hoses to silicone and a general tidy up of unnecessary equipment
